NUTRITION

Mindful nutrition plays an integral role in the treatment of addictions and recovery. It is well established that nutritional deficits occur in eating disorders.  At La Ventana a thorough nutritional assessment is conducted. The results of this evaluation are used to customize a nutritional and physical activity plan, which will aid in healing the patient. Recovery is enhanced when we address our physical needs as well as our psychological and spiritual needs. The mind affects the body and the body affects the mind. Our nutritional treatment is comprehensive and based on the science of nutrition and exercise physiology.

The benefits of this approach include an overall balance of mind, body and spirit. La Ventana provides nutritional support and education that helps patients make healthy dietary choices, during and after treatment. Diet and nutrition are beneficial for critical areas of recovery, including restoring healthy sleep patterns, improving concentration, regulating mood, and sustaining an even flow of energy - all important aspects of recovery. Mindful Nutrition is an important focus in our program. Delicious fresh and wholesome meals are prepared daily by our innovative and health conscious Chef.

Accurately measuring the nutritional and specifically vitamin and mineral deficiencies in admitted patients is not easily accomplished.

At La Ventana each patient goes through an initial nutritional intake procedure performed by a registered dietician.  We then prepare healthy food for the patients to move them along the path toward a healthy recovery.

Clients are encouraged to eat three very balanced and healthful meals daily. Since low blood sugars can induce lower energy levels and a depressed mood (with increased cravings as a result) we will encourage the consumption of three balanced but smaller meals, with  additional snacks provided throughout the day.

Many clients make a remarkable health recovery through a mere month of rehabilitation, and through the complete, balanced and targeted nutrition offered within.

Nutritional classes are offered as part of a comprehensive risk minimization and health promotional program.

Education on good nutrition teaches recovering clients how best to continue to repair the self inflicted physical damage of abuse and to better understand the implications of poor nutrition. With education, recovering clients understand how a proper diet influences their mental abilities and their overall mood stability, and how by neglecting their diet they increase the risk of relapse and further abuse.
