Step Down

At La Ventana we understand that after the successful completion of Residential Treatment,  women often "step down" to Day Treatment with Transitional Sober Living.  We believe each woman is created as a unique and valuable individual. Our family environment  at the La Ventana house presents an opportunity for life change by instilling purpose and vision to women whose lives have become unmanageable.  La Ventana  provides a safe environment so women can build healthy  relationships with self, and others  through transitional living.   We  help women to understand that they alone are ultimately responsible for the lives they lead and in reality they are capable and resourceful.  We treat all women with dignity and respect. We steer away from ongoing stigmatization and shame. The residents at la Ventana support each other as new friends are welcome like family and “self” is loved.

Female Athletes

La Ventana also recognizes the pressure put upon female athletes today to maintain certain body weight and shape. This often leads to unhealthy  behavior and contributes to persistent  eating disorders in the athlete.  We deal with denial as a core feature of eating disorders  and we recognize that this denial spreads from the athlete to the coach and often to  the entire athletic organization.  As long as the female athlete wins or competes successfully the eating disorder behavior can easily be overlooked by the coach , parents, family, and teammates.  “Do it for the team” becomes the driving force to maintain the eating disorder behavior and the ends justifies the means. Victory becomes shallow as the feelings of shame and depression take over the excitement of winning on the field.
At the La Ventana transitional sober living house the athlete lives in a safe place where women learn and practice new skills as they apply them to life settings on the athletic field and both in the house and out in the community. The athlete is surrounded in a loving “family setting” at our transitional living house and she benefits from sharing her life with other women with eating disorder behaviors.  We build confidence incorporated with patterns of successful, healthy living that continues with the women years after they leave La Ventana.   A new approach to sports and life are learned as women transform into healthy individuals with healthy choices and a positive understanding of “self”.
